I’m a regular guy, not a bodybuilding expert, fitness guru, or nutritionist. I do have practical real-world experience in losing weight and getting fit. I have more muscle and less body fat than 99% of men my age. I’ve also been overweight, bordering on obese.

At my worst, I’ve been 240 pounds, which is fat at my 5’11” height. I suffered from chronic back problems, gut issues, and inflammation. The worst was New Year’s Eve in 2005 when I got a piece of chicken stuck in my esophagus (which was swollen due to excess fat in my neck) and spent the night in the emergency room getting an endoscopy (without anesthesia) to push the offending morsel into my stomach.

I’ve been where most Americans have been. I’ve also course corrected and have remained in shape for years. I’ve been under 190 for over 15 years, and currently fluctuate between 170 and 180 pounds at 13%-15% body fat. I’ve still got some work to do, as my goal is to get under 12% body fat, but I’ve come a long way.

So I am an expert in putting practical eating wisdom into practice. I also do so with an extremely hectic schedule as the CEO of a large healthcare company. There’s not a lot of extra time in my day for complex food preparation, workouts, etc. I’m practical proof that anyone can look great following the simple principles I’m going to outline in this guide.

I’m also not a lunatic when it comes to food. I’m not proposing any crazy protein shakes, starvation, or restrictive diets. I enjoy bourbon, cigars, and ribeyes. I’m an amateur connoisseur of fine Texas BBQ (although I stay away from the side dishes) and enjoy the occasional pecan pie. I crush a ton of food each Thanksgiving and fall asleep watching football in a turkey-induced coma just like most people.

However, I structure my eating to look and feel good. It’s helped me in my marriage, parenting, career, and life in general. If you follow my advice, you’ll look good. It may take some time, but I guarantee you the journey will be worth it. Every aspect of your life will improve, relationships, career, mood, etc. You’ll get immediately healthy, and won’t have to visit the doctor so often.

There’s not a lot to eating for a good physique. It’s not that complex. I’m going to give you one Golden Rule of eating for a good physique plus 11 principals that will help you lose weight and improve your life.
